Amino acids

The building blocks of proteins

Cartilage

A tough and elastic connective tissue that is found in areas of the body such as the joints. It also makes up the early embryonic skeletal framework, which is slowly replaced by bone over time

Diluent

A liquid used to dissolve a drug so that it can be injected

Growth

The process of increasing in size (growing) to full development

Growth chart

A chart used to keep track of an individual’s growth (height and weight)

Growth hormone deficiency (GHD)

A disorder where the body does not produce enough growth hormone. In some cases, no growth hormone is produced at all. When a child has GHD, the pituitary gland in his or her body does not make enough growth hormone for normal growth, and the child may not be able to reach his or her anticipated adult height

Human growth hormone

Growth hormone (or human growth hormone) is a natural protein produced by the pituitary gland and made up of amino acids. It is needed for bones and cartilage to grow normally. Growth hormone also helps make muscle protein and tissue (including the heart and lungs) and helps to break down fats

Injection

When a medicine enters the body through a needle—either under the skin, into a muscle, or into a vein. Growth hormone therapy is injected under the skin

Injection site

The area on the body where a medicine is injected. Growth hormone therapy can be injected in the stomach area, upper thigh, upper buttocks, and back of the upper arm

Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1)

A hormone made primarily in the liver that works with growth hormone to help children grow. When IGF-1 is triggered by growth hormone, they work together to help bones, muscles, and other body tissues grow

Needle-Free Head

The "injection" part of the Needle-Free Tjet® device. The Needle-Free Head can be used for one week before you need to change to a new one. The Tjet® Needle-Free Head comes in 3 sizes: A, B, and C (size A Heads are included with the Demonstration Kit)

Pediatric Endocrinologist ("Endo")

A specialist doctor that treats conditions, such as growth disorders, that affect the gland system in children’s bodies

Pituitary gland

A small gland at the base of the brain that produces hormones, including growth hormone

Plasma

The liquid part of our blood. Made up mostly of water, it makes up just over half of the total volume of our blood

Protein

A large molecule consisting of one or more chains of amino acids. Proteins are required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body's cells, tissues, and organs

To combine two or more parts to make a new mixture

Somatropin

The human growth hormone made by the pituitary gland. It also refers to the synthetic version of the human growth hormone

Short stature

When the height of an individual is below normal for his or her age group

TEV-TROPIN®

A therapy that treats children who have growth failure due to GHD. It works by replacing growth hormone in the body. The growth hormone in TEV-TROPIN® is made in a lab, but it works just like the growth hormone a body would make

Tissue

A collection of similar cells. There are four basic tissues in the body: 1) epithelium; 2) connective tissues, including blood, bone, and cartilage; 3) muscle tissue; and 4) nerve tissue

Tjet® device

A Needle-Free device for injecting TEV-TROPIN®. The Tjet® device is available by prescription to all patients who are taking TEV-TROPIN®
